Planting more trees is one of the simplest and most effective ways of tackling climate change caused by greenhouse gas in the atmosphere.

Trees absorb carbon dioxide (CO2), a major greenhouse gas in the atmosphere that causes many problems like global warming and it releases oxygen, a vital gas for life to sustain.

In 2019, A study concluded that the most effective way to combat climate change is to plant over a trillion trees.

According to the study’s calculations, planting that amount of trees could potentially absorb nearly 830 billion tons of heat-trapping carbon dioxide from our atmosphere, to make sense that amount of carbon dioxide is about as much as humanity has emitted over the past 25 years in the world.

With those projections in mind, and in an effort to fight global warming, the government of Ukraine has recently come up with an ambitious plan to plant one billion trees across the country in the next three years.

Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, made the announcement a few days after the end of the COP26 climate negotiations.

“In the next three years, we plan to plant 1 billion trees in Ukraine. I will sign the corresponding decree on the launch of this program today,” Zelensky said.

“Unfortunately, the forestry sector has not been reformed for almost 50 years. We started to change this situation. Our changes will introduce European practices and make this area as transparent as possible,”  he said.

He promised that Ukraine’s timber market would work transparently.

“We are introducing new rules for the sale of timber that will eliminate the gray market.

In Ukraine, 100% of timber should be sold online, transparently, without corruption,” Zelensky said.

According to him, the first steps to fight the gray timber market have already yielded results.

“The first steps on this path have already yielded results. This is plus UAH 1 billion (or US$36.6 million) in revenue posted by state-owned forestry enterprises in the first quarter of the year [2021].

A national inventory of forest resources has also been conducted,” Zelensky said.

Together with most of the other European nations, Ukraine aims to plant three billion trees by the end of the decade to restore the “lungs of the planet.” to fight against global warming.

In the country’s northern region of Zhytomyr, workers have already started the tree-planting project into action, by planting small tree seedlings. And also representatives of businesses, the government, and the public held an all-Ukrainian rally to plant a million trees per day, 1,000,000 trees in just 24 hours.

A total of 600,000 square kilometers of Ukraine’s land is covered by forests. Three to four more are needed to make a significant impact on climate change, according to experts.
