Michigan startup doubled Tesla EV’s range to 1210 kilometers on a single charge
Recently, a Michigan startup called ONE(Our Next Energy) announced that its new battery can double the usual range of Tesla Model S. By replacing the factory-made battery on Tesla with the battery made by ONE, they achieved a record-breaking 752 miles (1210 kilometers) road trip on a single charge.
One of the most common challenges associated with owning an electric vehicle is driving range anxiety.
This anxiety has been identified as one of the major issues that the US faces when it comes to electric vehicles.
A study in 2021 says that one in five electric vehicle owners has switched back to a gas-powered car because of this anxiety.
Feels like the solution to all these problems is on the horizon because of the new improvements and innovation in the field of EV batteries.
The prototype battery by the startup called ONE has completed a 752-mile road trip on a single full charge.
The company says 55 miles per hour was the average speed of the trip and the results were examined and validated by a third-party device called a dynamometer, a device used to measure the power of the engine.
ONE claims that the road test has set a new industry record and a road test was performed to demonstrate the power of the battery.
“We want to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles by eliminating range anxiety, which holds back most consumers today. We are now focused on evolving this proof-of-concept battery into a new product called Gemini™, which will enable long distance trips on a single charge while improving cost and safety using sustainable materials,” said Mujeeb Ijaz, founder, and CEO of ONE who has more than 30 years of EV battery experience.
“The ONE Gemini battery aims to eliminate range as a barrier to electric vehicle adoption by doubling the available energy on board in the same package space,” said Ijaz.
The battery range is about twice the range of current Tesla models and also it is well above the last record made by Mercedes EQS, a car that beat Tesla in a battery range test with a driving range of 422 miles on a single charge.
“Even the highest range electric vehicles sold today lack the surplus energy required to overcome factors such as high-speed driving, extreme weather, mountainous terrain, or towing trailers in real-world conditions,” the startup stated in a press release.
The startup said that their project didn’t alter the Model S’s efficiency, but they only added a battery with a higher capacity.
The startup said that its battery has an energy capacity and density that is nearly twice that of the 2021 Tesla Model S battery pack.
This startup shows the flaws in the current technological approach by other industries, which is simply adding more charging stations.
Now, this turning point in EV battery technology is purely refreshing. The company announced that the production prototype of the Gemini battery will debut in 2023, probably in a BMW iX.
