There’s a motel in North Bergen, New Jersey. It’s like a heaven for people who don’t have a shelter to live.

The Lincoln Tunnel Motel, located near the Lincoln Tunnel into the Newyork city is providing free rooms for those in need. The hotel isn’t that much glamorous, but their service is.

For several years, Lincoln Tunnel Motel belongs to Brian Arya’s family. Brian Arya’s dad owns the motel which has 41 rooms. Then, Brian decided to join the business with his father. In 2012, Arya began working in the motel in the nighttime. Five years ago, his father gifted him partial ownership of the motel.

When the pandemic began, Brian Arya realized that the need for affordable places for people are rising. “People started getting quarantined, lockdowns starting happening, and then we started seeing an influx of unhoused people. You know, they just couldn’t afford rent anymore and so, they’d come to our motel,” Brian told the CBS News.

“I was doing the night shift while pursuing my acting career during the day,” he said.

He started filming TikTok videos about the motel, by featuring his coworker as “Steven the maid,” by putting on a maid costume. They began to take TikTok challenges. most of their videos were inspiring. After some time, they’ve gained more than 822,000 followers on TikTok.

One day I was thinking how interesting it would be if we just gave a free night stay to anyone who followed us on TikTok,” Brian said “People started getting quarantined, lockdowns starting happening, and then we started seeing an influx of unhoused people. You know, they just couldn’t afford rent anymore. And so, they’d come to our motel. And that just snowballed from there.”

Brian started his mission to provide free rooms for the needy. Then he started promoting his mission on TikTok as a “Free Room for You” program.

Then, students from a local college noticed the “Free Room for You” program on TikTok, These students began to donate food from the free food pantry of their college. And the helping hands from across the country started helping to fulfill Brian’s Amazon wishlist of supplies he copied from other similar charities and homeless shelters.

“Last night it was 18 degrees. And just the other day, someone – who remained anonymous – dropped off care packages that they’ve made themselves, full of items. And they dropped off like 20 of them, just for me to give to a random person just walking off the street. Which I did, just last night,” he said. Some of his followers on TikTok started donations by sending monetary donations, food, and toiletries for the people living in the motel.

Brian has already provided around 50 to 60 rooms for free. Half of the guests are the people who came after losing their homes at the onset of the pandemic.

“There’s definitely a community there,” he said. “Some of them are locals who have lived at the motel for a long time now … we all got to know each other.”
